Taj Mahal has been singing a lot of songs for a lot of years. He lives for the music and you can hear that devotion in his voice. He has recorded albums with Mexican, Hawaiian, Malian bands and more. He loves the tradition of music, understands its importance to the human experience and I believe he is excited about its future.
Most of Taj’s music is categorized as blues, but I think that is too restrictive for much of what he does. Maybe we should simply call it folk music. He plays music for anyone who will listen. He invites us all to join in, and with that big warm smile he is hard to resist.
Have you ever been late to a party? I have. In fact, that is usually how I arrive. David Crosby released the Album If I Could Only Remember My Name… in 1971 but it wasn’t until almost forty years later that I listened to it. I know, I know. I have no excuse. I have been listening to CSN my entire life, so I don’t know how I missed out on this one.
The entire album is exceptional. I can easily and gladly listen through the full length without skipping tracks. Even so, the stand out for me is the eight minute triumph called Cowboy Movie.
